Tiger 21 Investor Group
TIGER 21 is the country’s elite peer-to-peer learning group for high-net-worth investors. Each month entrepreneurs, investment managers, Wall Street alumni, inheritors of wealth, business owners and others gather to talk about the challenges and strategies of transitioning into disciplined wealth managers.
Mergercoach.com’s Bill Case was chosen to lead the Texas Chapter of TIGER 21 in 2007. The group meets monthly in various Texas locations based on member interest and preference. The Texas Chapter is made up of 12-14 person peer learning groups that leverage the collective intelligence, experience and expertise of group members in thought-provoking, high energy day long sessions. Don’t live in Texas? No problem, many members commute for the day.
Some members refer to TIGER 21 Texas as the YPO or WPO for investors. Many of them have been actively involved in YPO as they built their businesses and accumulated substantial wealth. Now they are more interested in investing and wealth preservation. The forum-like structure of TIGER 21 is very familiar and powerful for scrutinizing member investments and helping them transition to the “what’s next” phase of their lives.
Founded in 1999, TIGER 21 is headquartered in New York City with chapters in New York, Texas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami and soon Washington D.C., and Canada. Its 160 members currently manage approximately $10 billion in assets. Annual membership dues are $30,000 and require a $10 million minimum in portfolio assets. Most Texas chapter members are managing considerably more than that.
As a Tiger 21 member, you will receive entree to an elite group of high achievers who are actively seeking opportunities and sharing strategies. Additionally, life issues surrounding wealth such as how much money to give your children and other questions are regularly round-tabled by people who have been there. The confidential, supportive environment is unlike any other.
“Tiger 21 is the premier peer-peer learning organization for high net-worth (greater than $10 million) investors,” says Bill Case. “Our Texas Tiger 21 Chapter specializes in helping investors fix broken portfolios. If you don’t believe you have a broken or under-performing portfolio, you haven’t checked lately.
A nationwide survey found that investors expect the U.S. stock market to return an annual average of 13.7% over the next 10 years. Ask your highly paid adviser and they will respond with predicted returns more in the 6 – 9% range.
Historically, inflation has eaten away three percentage points of return a year. Investment expenses and taxes each have cut returns by roughly one to two percentage points a year. All told, those costs reduce annual returns by five to seven points. So, in order to earn 6% for clients after inflation, fees and taxes, financial planners will somehow have to pick investments that generate 11% or 13% a year before costs. Where will they find such huge gains?
So, you go looking for a new adviser. They then wheel in the diversification “grand illusion.” A typical portfolio contains 51% global stocks, 26% bonds, 13% cash and 5% each in commodities and real estate, after fees and inflation, you will be lucky to earn 1%. The risk feels a little high for a measly 1%.
Following the demise of Lehman, the investment adviser landscape has forever changed. So instead of looking for a new adviser that will kick the returns can down the road, get in the game and join the greater-than-1%-achievers!”
